RESEARCH

Ocular/oculodermal melanocytosis can lead to uveal melanoma but information regarding prognosis is lacking. In a retrospective analysis of 7872 patients with uveal melanoma, Shields and colleagues found that patients with uveal melanoma arising from ocular/oculodermal melanocytosis had double the rate of metastasis at 10 years (48%) compared with those without melanocytosis (24%).

Bressler and colleagues found that intravitreal ranibizumab, administered to treat diabetic macular edema, appeared to be associated with a reduced risk for diabetic retinopathy worsening in eyes with or without proliferative diabetic retinopathy, and intravitreal triamcinolone also appeared to be associated with a reduced risk for proliferative diabetic retinopathy worsening.

Vision is known to be important for balance, but no large studies have examined the impact of vision loss on vestibular balance (tested under eyes-closed firm surface conditions). In the study by Willis and colleagues, balance measures were compared in Americans with normal vision, uncorrected refractive error, and visual impairment in the 2001-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. Individuals with either visual impairment or uncorrected refractive error had worse vestibular balance compared with individuals with normal vision. Moreover, individuals with visual impairment more often self-reported falling difficulty compared with those with normal vision.

CLINICAL REVIEW & EDUCATION

Nadal and colleagues described a surgical technique for treating neovascular glaucoma that involves removing the anterior chamber fibrous complex after administration of antibody to vascular endothelial growth factor. They reported good intraocular pressure results using this technique, thus restoring the anterior chamber angle and facilitate drainage of aqueous humor.
