Conrad Berens, M.D., 1889-1963.
—The end of one of the outstanding careers in Ophthalmology came with the death, after a prolonged and painful illness, of Dr. Conrad Berens, age 73, in his home on Center Island, near Oyster Bay, New York, Saturday, March 2, 1963. He was the son of a well-known ophthalmologist, Dr. Conrad Berens, and Mary E. Berens, and was born Dec 2, 1889, in Philadelphia. Most of his professional life was spent in the New York area.Dr. Berens was a great clinician, surgeon, teacher, author, and organizer and took an active interest in civic and social affairs. He was a devoted father and husband and was adored by his many grateful patients. He was a good golfer, an excellent tennis player, an expert swimmer, and a fine yachtsman.As a clinician, Dr. Berens enjoyed a large and varied private practice and in his prime employed
