This text, translated from German, attempts to correlate the clinical appearance and histologic changes in retinal vascular disease. In ophthalmology this goal is always sought but rarely achieved. The author is to be congratulated for embarking upon a study requiring much diligence and patience which can only assist in a better understanding of the morphological changes that occur in retinal vascular disease.
Moribund patients were examined ophthalmocopically and then closely followed until the time of death, at which time the eyes were removed for histologic study. Antemortem fundus drawings and, in a few cases, fundus photographs were obtained. The clinical changes thus graphically recorded during life were analyzed and interpreted in terms of the observed postmortem histology.
