The vitreous cavity of 61 patients with serous and hemorrhagic disciform detachment of the macula was studied with the biomicroscope and a three-mirror contact lens. Forty-one patients had serous and 20 had hemorrhagic disciform detachment of the macula. Syneresis and shrinkage of the vitreous gel was nearly always present in both conditions, suggesting that it may be a factor in their pathogenesis. Chorioretinal degeneration appears to be another component in the pathogenesis of the condition, particularly in the hemorrhagic type.
