NEI Offers Rats for Research.
—The National Eye Institute is making available, free of charge, rats with inherited retinal degeneration of the inbred RCS strain and two congenic strains differing in coat color and eye pigmentation. The RCS animals, now at the F36 generation of breeding, are tanhooded and pink-eyed. The congenic strains are black-hooded and black-eyed (designated RCS-p/ +, now at the N10 generation) and albino (RCS-c, at N7, F2). The strains are being produced with the support of an NEI contract at Harvard Medical School.Requests for the animals should specify the number and strains of rats desired as well as the name, position, address, telephone number, and research interest of the investigator. A brief (less than one page) scientific justification for the animals requested should also be included.Requests should be sent to Dr. Richard L. Sidman, Department of Neuroscience, Children's Hospital
