Adjuvant Cryotherapy for Focal Nodular Melanoma of the Conjunctiva

• After excision of invasive conjunctival melanoma, there is a high recurrence rate, usually owing to small amounts of residual intraepithelial melanocytes or tumor cells at the base of the excision. Adjuvant cryotherapy was used in two patients to widen the margins of surgical excision and prevent recurrences, which have not developed during periods of 28 and 24 months postoperatively. This method allows preservation of substantia propria and reduces possible functional complications from surgical sacrifice of larger amounts of full-thickness conjunctiva.
