—More information in application packets will assist applicants in choosing programs and will help programs to attract suitable candidates. Data that should be included are the philosophy of the program and a resident-prepared guide describing faculty interests, research, fellowships obtained by residents, didactic teaching, operative experience, role of fellows, schedule, salary, call, housing, and vacation.
Applications.
—The Centralized Application Service (CAS), San Francisco, minimizes paperwork. But without being the only application, it is viewed less favorably when compared with the program's own application. At Boston University, among matched applicants using both types of applications, interviews were obtained at only 15% of programs using the CAS vs 46% for conventional applications.
