AT THE start of my 10-year term of office as editor of the Archives, I offered a "forum for sober, analytical, and interpretive thoughts on matters of value to our readers" and anticipated an informative and useful dialogue.1 I have enjoyed this process immensely and hope that our readers have benefited from the attempt. The founding editor, Hermann Knapp, declared in 1869:

The objectives and goals of the Archives of Ophthalmology are education: to inform its readers of progress, problems, and pertinent research in the practice of ophthalmology through the publication of original contributions and observations.

This mission statement is valid today; we remain committed to the publication of new and substantial information.

Retrospective evaluation of 10 years' evolution of an ophthalmologic journal is useful, and, in this case, it is also gratifying.2,3 During this time, there has been a torrential outpouring of new ideas in ophthalmology. Many
