ABSTRACT

Dr. Missotten has provided us with an up to date and well-organized survey of human retinal structure as revealed by electron microscopy. His work is divided into sections on the choroid and photoreceptors, outer plexiform layer, inner nuclear layer, inner plexiform layer, and ganglion cell layer. In addition, there is a section on the relations of neurons to the blood supply and to intercellular space. Each chapter is provided with a historical introduction which summarizes light microscope studies as well as with abundant electron microscope plates of high quality. A summary of his findings concludes the chapter.

There are also correlations made with electrophysiological studies of the retina and in the final section of the book he essays a hypothesis of horizontal cell function in which those cells are the mediators of lateral inhibition, based on the agreement between the extent of dendritic arbors of the cell with the area
