RT Journal A1 Char DH, Castro JR, Stone RD, et al T1 HElium ion therapy for choroidal melanoma JF Archives of Ophthalmology JO Archives of Ophthalmology YR 1982 FD June 1 VO 100 IS 6 SP 935 OP 938 DO 10.1001/archopht.1982.01030030943008 UL http://dx.doi.org/10.1001/archopht.1982.01030030943008 AB • Forty patients with choroidal melanomas received radiation therapy with helium ion-charged particles. Thirty-six of 40 patients either remained stable or demonstrated tumor shrinkage. Seventeen of 18 patients followed up for at least one year after therapy demonstrated tumor regression, with a mean tumor shrinkage of approximately 40%. The most effective method of choroidal melanoma management is unclear. Charged-particle external-beam irradiation may be more applicable and have less ocular morbidity than either radioactive plaques or photocoagulation.
