Translational science with clinical promise has long been an important feature in the Archives of Ophthalmology. In the first volume of the Archives, published in 1869, Dr H. de Gouvêa of Rio de Janiero, Brazil, authored an article using the basic observations of the pathologist Cohnheim, the physiologist Donders, and others to produce lime burns on the corneas of animals and attempted to apply his finding to improve the treatment of patients in his clinic.1
